Thank you to everyone who joined us for our annual Grain Place Field Day on Saturday, July 14 at the Grain Place Farm.
In the morning we shared an up-close view of our 280-acre organic farm, which has been pioneering organic, regenerative agriculture in central Nebraska for decades. Walking the fields, David Vetter was able to share some of what we have learned. The tour also included a tour of Grain Place Foods, the organic grain processing facility on site.
We shared a delicious lunch on the farm, made with organic food from the Grain Place, as well as other local sources. Our meal was prepared by Hummingbird Catering from Lincoln.
After lunch, we heard our engaging keynote presentation by Kyle Garner, CEO of ORGANIC INDIA:
Agriculture Innovation, Protecting Small and Family Farms and a Vision: Challenges Facing Organic Agriculture and Trade.”
Organic India is a leading mission-driven manufacturer of herb-based wellness teas and functional herbal supplements. Since 1999, Organic India has worked directly with thousands of family famers in India, creating sustainable communities through fair-market agriculture, access to healthcare, education and gender equality and empowerment programs. ORGANIC INDIA products are certified organic and wildcrafted on over half a million acres of traditional and converted farmland throughout India.
Other Field Day events:
2018 is the 100th anniversary of Willa Cather’s My Ántonia, a novel well-loved for its depiction of a strong woman who “had only to stand in the orchard, to put her hand on a little crab tree and look up at the apples, to make you feel the goodness of planting and tending and harvesting at last.”
For a century the book has introduced readers around the world to Nebraska and lives lived in close connection to the prairie ecosystem.
To honor this anniversary, University of Nebraska-Lincoln professor and Willa Cather Foundation board member Andrew Jewell shared about the way My Ántonia helps us appreciate the distinctive landscape and communities of central Nebraska.
